If you’ve got an old, damaged, or non-roadworthy car sitting in your driveway, it might be time to consider end-of-life vehicle (ELV) disposal.

What Is an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV)?

An ELV is a car or light van that is no longer fit to be driven and is destined for dismantling and recycling. Most vehicles become ELVs because they’ve been involved in an accident, failed the MOT with repairs too costly, or have simply reached the end of their usable life.

Legal Requirements for ELV Disposal in NI (2025 Update)

You must dispose of your ELV through a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). This ensures hazardous fluids are safely removed, usable parts are recovered and recycled, and the shell is properly crushed and processed. If scrapped through an approved ATF like Ecopart, you’ll receive a Certificate of Destruction (CoD).

Why ELV Recycling Matters More Than Ever

  • Reducing landfill waste
  • Recovering metals, plastics, and glass for reuse
  • Preventing harmful fluids from leaking into soil and waterways
  • Lowering the demand for raw materials

By 2025, nearly 95% of an ELV must be recycled or recovered under UK targets — a standard Ecopart is proud to exceed.

The ELV Process – What Happens to Your Car?

  1. De-Pollution: Fluids like oil, fuel, and coolant are safely removed and disposed of.
  2. Part Removal & Recycling: Usable parts such as batteries, tyres, and catalytic converters are removed for resale or recycling.
  3. Shredding & Recovery: The car body is crushed and processed for scrap metal recovery.
  4. Certification: A Certificate of Destruction is issued and reported to the DVLA.

What You Need to Do as the Owner

  • Remove personal belongings (glove box, boot, etc.)
  • Provide the V5C (logbook) – if lost, inform the ATF
  • Notify the DVLA online or by post once the car has been scrapped
  • Never accept cash – payments must be made via bank transfer or cheque under NI law
